Journalism Shop co-founder Brett Levy joined a panel discussion this weekend at Stanford’s Future of Freelancing conference to discuss the benefits and challenges of getting freelancers to team up. The Journalism Shop was created to help out-of-work Los Angeles Times journalists find freelance contracts, but is expanding membership to select journalists around the nation.
The Journalism Shop recently became an LLC, in hopes of winning more work for its members, Levy announced in response to a question on how freelance groups should be structured. An LLC is easier to form and more flexible than a non-profit, he said.
The audience seemed particularly interested in The Journalism Shop’s partnership with Ebyline, an online marketplace where freelancers can pitch stories and publishers can hire reporters. The Journalism Shop is currently beta testing Ebyline.
Levy was joined by Moderator Laird Harrison an award-winning magazine writer; Ethan Waters, founder of San Francisco’s Grotto; Rebecca Rosen Lum, Unit Chair of the Guild Freelancers; and Jonathan Miller, the executive director of Homeland Productions.
